The View From…The Castle of Santa Cruz, Murcia, Spain

The view from the Castle of Santa Cruz turned out to be completely worth almost being trampled to death by a horse which, if you visit the town of Caravaca de la Cruz during the first five days of May, is something you might just experience too.

Caravaca de la Cruz is one of the five holy cities of the world (alongside Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago de Compostela and Santo Toribio de Liébana) and is best visited during The Santísima Vera Cruz festivities  (1st – 5th May) when the Caballos del Vino (Running of the Wine Horses) and Moors and Christians parades take place.

Despite the potential danger (helpful tip – don’t get in the way of the horses…or the runners…or the other spectators!) the atmosphere, colourful parades and seemingly never ending flow of red wine made this one of the stand-out memories from my time spent in Murcia.
