The View From…Loch Voil, Balquhidder, Scotland

When getting lost looks like this, involves stumbling upon a Scottish legend’s grave and a sipping a cold pint at Monachyle MHOR, it’s really not so bad! One of the things I wanted to do this year was to explore more of Scotland, especially some of the amazing places that are literally on my doorstep. My sister and I took a backyard road trip in the general direction of Loch Voil, Balquhidder and decided to keep going for as long as there was light!

We popped into two of the area’s best restaurants – MHOR84 for some food and Monachyle MHOR Hotel for a drink – as well as making a quick pitstop at Rob Roy’s grave in Balquhidder Church cemetery.  We timed it just right for catching the sunset over the beautiful Loch Voil, somewhere that is insanely close to home but I had never gotten around to visiting up until now.

If you’re in the Stirling or Callander area and want to visit the burial site of Scottish folk-hero Rob Roy MacGregor, it’s an easy and scenic drive along Loch Lubnaig to Balquhidder, passing through Strathyre. You can also walk from the cemetery to Creag an Tuirc – a rocky crag with spectacular view that was once the gathering place of the Clan MacLaren.
